YENDOR is a boutique arts organization founded in New Jersey’s largest city, Newark. Founded in 2003, as the brainchild of the illustrious Rodney Gilbert, YENDOR was created to address the need for integrated public art in the city of Newark. With a passion for the arts and unwavering devotion to the welfare of others, Rodney sought to alleviate the challenges experienced by under-resourced artists and communities as it relates to cultural and artistic expression. Rodney believed arts education directly connected through the development of public art would initiate a powerful change in under resourced communities.

The organization prides itself on introducing the arts (in its various forms) to historically resilient communities and diverse populations through community-driven activities that include a portfolio of performing, visual, and wellness arts programs. We believe that public art is an anchor for economic growth and quality of life for residents.

YENDOR specializes in the scholastic, managerial, and installation aspects of creative placemaking. The work of the YENDORian team focuses on Arts & Stakeholder Management, Visual Arts, Arts Education, and Theatre (via Yendor Theatre Company). It is through this lens that we are able to liaise equitable arts programming by way of collaborative partnerships with Urban Municipalities, Corporate Entities, and Educational Institutions.

In the spirit of community development, restoration and sustenance, YENDOR also prides itself on providing advocacy opportunities that extend beyond the Arts. In its totality, YENDOR is dedicated to bringing the arts to the people.

Project Overview

PSE&G's Waverly Substation, in partnership with YENDOR and the City of Newark, will undergo a revitalization project that will transform the substation’s exterior walls into a series of community murals. The project aims to engage and inspire South Ward residents by showcasing the area's unique character and rich cultural heritage through visual art.

We are seeking skilled visual artists and/or muralists to submit their portfolios for consideration. Artists who have a strong connection to Newark, New Jersey and the South Ward and who are passionate about using their art to celebrate the community's history are highly encouraged to apply. Artists should include 6-10 high-resolution images in a zip folder, with a brief description for each image. Links to websites or social media profiles may also be included.

Scope of Work

Each participating artist will be tasked with designing and executing murals across 3 to 4 designated 4’ x 8’ aluminum panels which will be installed into the substation wall. The murals should capture the essence of the South Ward community, drawing inspiration from the proposed series title: "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: A South Ward Odyssey”. Artists are encouraged to interpret these themes creatively and engage with the community during the design process to ensure the murals authentically represent the South Ward's spirit and heritage:

  • ‘Environmental Justice’ highlights the community's relationship with the environment, the importance of clean air, water, and green spaces, and the fight for equitable access to these resources.
  • ‘Hope for Tomorrow’ explores the aspirations and dreams of the South Ward community, showcasing its vision for a brighter future and the potential for positive change.
  • ‘Civil Rights Struggles and Triumphs' pays homage to the historical struggles and victories of the Civil Rights Movement in the South Ward, recognizing the community's resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
  • ‘Rise of Jazz' celebrates the rich musical heritage of the South Ward, particularly its contribution to the development of jazz music, and the role it played in shaping the cultural identity of the community.
  • ‘Community Solidarity’ emphasizes the importance of unity and togetherness within the South Ward, highlighting the strength that comes from shared experiences, mutual support, and collective action.
  • ‘Resilience in Crisis’ acknowledges the challenges and hardships faced by the South Ward community, showcasing its ability to overcome adversity and emerge stronger, demonstrating its unwavering spirit and determination.
